A Guide to Tipping the Movers
Moving is one of the most difficult events that one has to go through. In
order to take some of the heavy burden off your shoulders, it is best to
hire a moving company to help you move your furniture, appliances and
important stuff into your new home. Moving companies assign movers who are
the ones tasked to actually help you move out and into your new dwelling
area. Movers usually come in pairs or groups of three to five, depending
on how much you need to move. The more extensive your move and the more
furniture you have, the more movers are sent to help you out.
Tipping the movers for the help they have extended and how much to give
them are almost always a difficult decision. In the United States, tipping
movers for good services is almost always done. Take note that you are
only obliged to tip the movers if they have given you the quality of
service that you expected. Tipping movers should only be reserved for
those who do their jobs right. If you do not feel as though you have
received good service, do not be compelled to tip your movers. Feel free
to give more to movers who have surpassed your expectations. Here are
additional guidelines for you to handle your movers and how to tip
accordingly:
How much to tip the movers
When moving, make sure that you have decided how much to give your movers.
If there are only one or two movers, a tip between $40 to $60 for both
(split between them if there are two) is enough. The exact tip that you
give to the movers should be proportional to how difficult the move is. If
your movers have to go through stairs, carry heavy items and move out
awkward items, virtue will dictate giving them more tip. If there are two
or more movers, it is safe to give a tip of about $20 per person. You can
give the entire tip to the head mover or their supervisor for them to
divide equally afterwards. It is also great to give the tip individually
to each of your movers to add some personally touch. Make sure that you
have prepared the exact bill for your tip as you can not expect the movers
to give you spare change when you give them their tip. Some people claim
that the rule of thumb and the industry standard for tipping your movers
is 5% of your total bill from your moving company. This is quite
reasonable. If you have a bill of $500, you can tip a total of about $25
or $10 to $20 for each mover depending on how satisfied you were of the
service your movers provided you.
Movers appreciate refreshments
It is best to provide your movers some cold drinks, coffee, tea or
whatever refreshments that are best for the weather and the time of the
day. Remember that your movers will probably be thirsty and hungry from
loading all your items. Giving your movers something to freshen up will be
the least that you can do. Remember not to give any alcohol as
refreshments. Your movers will surely love a glass of beer, but will run
the risk of losing their jobs.
Giving mover additional tip
If the movers have provided you with an absolutely excellent service, you
can tip your movers to up to about $100. This is if you have some extra
money to spare, and if you are really very thankful. The movers should
have to be really good and extremely helpful. Movers who go beyond their
call of duty deserve this much tip, such as helping you in your last
minute packing, taking time to neatly and carefully wrap up your fragile
items, and helping you with other tasks not even required of your movers
to do. If you have your movers running the road to and fro for various
reasons, your movers will surely appreciate some additional tip. For
cross-country moves that take days to finish, you can give your movers a
little more. Typical tips for movers range from $40 to up to $200. In this
case however, you can consult your moving company about their movers
tipping guidelines. Remember that tipping your movers is a gesture that is
entirely up to you. There are no fixed rules as to how much your gratuity
to your movers are, how difficult the move is and how much you are willing
to give your movers without hurting your wallet.
